International students coming to the USB

For students who want to acquire a superior education while experiencing life in a vibrant country with a rich diversity of cultures and world famous natural beauty, the USB is the place to be.

The USB's MBA programme is internationally accredited by AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA. All classes are presented in English.

Exchange students typically stay at USB for 4 to 6 months, during which time they can earn credits towards their MBA at their home university. (They can also do a Full-time MBA over one year.)

Application for short-term study

The following is important for students completing part of their MBA studies at the USB:

  • Students remain registered at their home university while studying at the USB.
  • The choice of subjects taken at the USB should fit in with the student's overall programme. Read more about the structure and content of the USB MBA.
  • Exchange students participate on the Full-time MBA programme at the USB.
  • Students should clarify the transfer of credits with their home university.
  • No scholarships are available for this type of enrolment.
  • No selection tests are necessary.

Exchange study fees

Students are responsible for the following costs:

  • An international student registration levy of R7 400 (for 2015)
  • All accommodation, transport and medical costs
  • Study material (photocopies, text books)
  • Refreshments and meals

The closing dates for exchange student applications is 15 April for the July (second) semester and 15 October for the January (first) semester. The link to your online application will be sent to you via your International Office after your official nomination by your home institution.

The following documents need to accompany your application:

  • Letter of recommendation from your home institution
  • Comprehensive CV
  • Academic record
  • Proof of at least 18 months’ work experience
  • Recent TOEFL test results (all classes taught in English)
  • Subject registration form
  • Copy of your passport (valid for no less than 30 days after expiry of intended visit)
  • Proof of medical insurance for the entire duration of your stay in South Africa
  • Your contact details - including your e-mail address.

Important: Students should FIRST receive official notification of their approval at the USB BEFORE they purchase flight tickets or make accommodation arrangements.

USB students studying abroad

Enhance your MBA with international exposure

USB MBA students can add international exposure to their studies in two ways:

  • International Study Module: Earn credits on the compulsory annual MBA International Study Module which includes attending modules at an overseas business school and visiting international companies. Various study tours are offered annually. The International Study Module includes the EMBA Consortium modules​
  • Exchange studies: USB students can choose to complete part of their studies at one of the USB's overseas partner schools. Exchange studies are optional. Current MBA students can click here to see all the exchange study options, case competitions and research competitions currently available to them.

Requirements for exchange studies abroad

  • USB students need to apply for nominations via the USB’s International Affairs Office. Contact Genevieve Fillis at​ in this regard.
  • USB’s Head of Academic Affairs confirms the credit conversion of the courses that the students want to do abroad.
  • Students must have a good academic standing and an average of more than 60%.
